3rd Generation French Winemaker Making a Serious Name for Himself.

Updated: Aug 16, 2019

As a boy he worked alongside his grandfather in the ancient soils of the Loire Valley. Now Patrice Grasset is making wine his way, and doing a damn good job.

~Patrice Grasset Bordeaux, 2016

Naked Wines continues to sponsor phenomenal French winemakers and they continue to crank out equally phenomenal wines of almost every varietal. Roussanne, Chenin Blanc, Marsanne...I tend to love me some French whites, so those are the first I think of, after Bordeaux, of course.

My thoughts on this Bordeaux...are below.

The Review: 4.5/5

I’m excited to taste the second varietal from Grasset on my list......The color is a deep shade of garnet that is almost magenta or fuchsia when held up to the light. Quite beautiful.

Bordeaux reds seem to just jump out at you with class and grace when you open the bottle. This Bordeaux isn’t obnoxious but it is certainly aware and proud of its heritage while the nose and flavor make it clear this isn’t an ordinary red.

For me, the wine really embodies that old-world style while also having a tailored fruit back end that smooths out like butter on hot bread. Something that should be enjoyed with an equally decadent meal, or at the very least a few killer cheeses and cured meats.

Wood, wet earth, forest floor(?), wet wood...did I mention earth or soil? There is also a hint of pepper on the nose, but not black pepper, more like a roasted red bell pepper, which I thought was interesting. Also present is that magnificent aged cellar essence that comes off as evidence of hard work and craftsmanship. The alcohol rears its head if you swirl it enough, but for the most part it’s the aged woody/earthiness and the subtle fruit that run the show. To sum it up, it’s delicious. Just slightly jammy and dangerously easy to drink after a bit of breathing time.

I think Patrice has proven himself worthy of his place among the Naked Wines elite. I will most certainly look forward to more.

Cheers!!
