In a small town where everyone looked at me like I was lost, it was refreshing to find a duck with the same problem. Oh, and there was beer.
Fort Madison, Iowa has it's share of distinct and marvelous sights and sounds, but to find a bar with good, big-portioned pub grub and a list of house-brewed beers, right on the main drag no less, was spectacular.
“This is probably the best view in town.” - Me at the bar
From any seat at the bar you can just lean back and look out their massive front windows, across the street (Avenue H/Hwy 61), across the railroad tracks and right down to the actual fort and the mighty Mississippi. The only patron in the place other than Heather and I was clearly a local who propped himself up comfortably at the front corner of the bar, every so often glancing over the top of his newspaper to catch another glimpse of a passing train or a massive barge fighting the water's current.
The beer itself was 'okay' I guess. I think they have seven brews, I tried three of them (Lucky Duck Lager, American Wheat, Ringneck Red) but only kinda liked one. It tasted like they may have mixed up their lines a while ago and just hadn't gone back to properly clean everything. It's possible the kegs they use may not have been cleaned correctly. I could be wrong. Unfortunately, beer is a fickle mistress before, during and after the brewing process because one dirty hose or fitting or keg can permanently alter the beer anywhere along the way.
The Breakdown:
The beer was and is worth a try. I would have spent more time there if I could have. The food was HUGE and seriously delicious. Raspberry chipotle chicken sandwich, um yes. GIANT tenderloin sandwich (honestly the size of a medium sauce pan) was crunch-tastic and easily enough for 2 people. We asked for a hand-saw to trim the edges off.
No we didn't, but can you imagine??
Ok, never-mind, bad joke. Move along.
