As a fan of wine and everything that comes along with it, I'm also a fan of the SOMM film franchise. It wasn't until I watched the first documentary that I realized how particular varietals stand out as favourites among the wine elite. I mean, I assumed there were some grapes the Somm crowd may find "superior" to others, but with the plethora of references to Albarino throughout the franchise, I figured I should get with the program and start soaking some of this stuff up.
~Quevedo Family Portuguese Alvarinho, Vintage No.1, 2017
The Review: 3.5/5
I have to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever had Avarinho/Albarino before.
Don’t shoot me! I have no idea why it has taken me this long (there really are no excuses), but here I am, joining the club. Maybe people will take me seriously now…? I doubt it.
So to start off, the color is almost completely clear, with just a touch of sunshine and a golden aura. Maybe the lighting in my place is a bit off, but there is only the faintest amount of hue to this.
The nose comes next with a round, soft, sugar smell that lets you know there’s gonna be a sweet element to this wine... but that’s not all. There’s a warm breeze sweeping through a sun-soaked back yard (dag-nabit! I wrote this whole thing then went to post it and saw “sun-soaked” in the description of the wine...now I’m conflicted as to if I should change it...oh well). However there is a fruit note I’m catching right on the nose but can’t put my finger on it. Almost a pre-ripe peach or apricot? Maybe pineapple? Whatever it is, there’s plenty of it, now it’s time for me to drink! Haha
That sweet note hits your palate just before the wine does. Almost like the sugar isn’t actually in the wine, but in a cloud surrounding it. A haze of sweetness that evaporates off the wine as you swirl it in your mouth.
It’s really quite delicious. There is a bit of a green air to it. Similar to a New Zealand Sauv Blanc (not always a favorite of mine, but this has its own thing going on). A slightly stemmy back end but the stems are quite flavorful and retain a bit of that apricot or pineapple that’s tucked away in there.
I will most certainly be trying more of this varietal and hopefully more from the Quevedo Family. Teamwork makes the dream work ;-)
Cheers!!
