If you're an eagle-eyed TV viewer, like me, you notice inconsistencies, like when someone picks up a coffee cup in one hand and suddenly it's in the other hand or a different color in the next shot. "Lethal Weapon" has taken it to the next level by using a completely different house for the exterior shot of Murtaugh's home over the course of just two episodes. So I decided to go on an adventure with my mother while she was in town, to see both the Murtaugh residences, since I live about 10 minutes away from them.
The house you see above (Sherman Oaks, CA) was the first stop for my mother and I. This was used as the exterior for Murtaugh's home for most of the first season, from what I've gathered. It was also used in the later seasons of one of my favorite shows, "Californication". I think it was Mulder's wife/ex-wife's house where she lived with the gravel-voiced writer who was nuts. It may have been that guy's house actually. Either way, it's seen its fair share of TV and film shoots...and for a while, was Murtaugh's house. Note, it's on a regular, fairly flat, residential street corner with no large, angled driveway on the right, a staple in season 2 and 3.
This house (Encino, CA), although it features similar architecture and colors, looks nothing like the season 1 home but is now used as the exterior for Murtaugh's house. Note the driveway that nudges the other driveway on the right for the "Murtaugh talks to his neighbor" scenes, and this driveway was where Murtaugh famously stored his boat for a short period of time. Now at the end of season 3, the show has thoroughly established this as the front of Murtaugh's home. However, in season 3's finale, "The Spy Who Loved Me", an exterior shot of the OLD HOUSE, the first picture in this article, is used to establish the Murtaugh household. WHAT?? DO YOU NOT HAVE ANY NIGHTTIME BROLL ESTABLISHING SHOTS OF THE MAIN CHARACTER'S HOME? A LOCATION YOU SHOOT AT CONSTANTLY?
Anywho, my mother and I were a bit perturbed by the obvious brain-fart the producers and possibly editors had made...so we decided to go scout both locations on a sunny day in the valley. Quality mother/son bonding time, if you ask me.
If you don't already, you should watch "Lethal Weapon". I was almost embarrased how much I enjoyed the show at first, then I was furious when I learned Clayne Crawford's character Riggs would be written off the show. How do you have "Lethal Weapon" without Riggs?? There was no way they could come back from this. Who could possibly replace a guy I had never seen before, but now I can't get enough of? There isn't a human alive that could fill this void in my heart.
Then came Stifler. They brought in Stifler to fill my void. And how magical it was...is...you know what I mean.
So give the show a shot. It's better than that last, say, five "best shows" on network television. "This Is Us" and "Grey's Anatomy" and "The Big Bang Theory" can all go jump off a bridge one after the other. Terrible. Gross. Ew.
The Breakdown:
Watch "Lethal Weapon", preferably on Hulu so you can avoid commercials.
