Rosé All Day.

Updated: Jun 3, 2019

The pink nectar of the gods. Bestowed upon us by brilliant winemakers across the globe, it's a lover to many and a friend to all. Sunday funday, taco Tuesday, thirsty Thursday...no matter the day, it's always a good time for Rosé.

~Chris Baker Willamette Valley Rosé, 2018

Whereas Sutter Home's "White Zinfandel" was the result of a "failed experiment" in 1972 followed by a fermentation mistake in 1975 on the 3rd attempt, Rosé can be made using the same Saignée or "bleeding" process (one of three popular ways to make it), but in the case of Rosé, it's completely intentional. The appearance of Rosé is actually closer to what much of the wine throughout history probably looked like, since the processes used to make deep, dark reds were not employed until more recently. Arguably, what we now know as "Rosé" could be the oldest style of wine in history. Wow...deep.

The Review: 3.5/5

The color is the first thing that reels you in. Like any good Rosé, it's gotta have that eye-popping pigmentation. Baker's bottle shows up with some serious “flamingo meets watermelon” pink with shimmers of gold throughout. It's bright, it's inviting, it's Rosé!

Sugar and a bit of butter are on the nose initially, along with some flower essence, like walking into the garden section of a hardware store. There’s a touch of grapefruit rind in there as well.

The flavor is semi-sweet with an air of citrus and the air of tartness that comes along with it. It’s got a very clean and crisp profile that finishes with more of the grapefruit, eventually fading into nothingness...haha. Too dramatic? Never.

It’s one of those whites you can sense was grown in a moisture-rich climate. It’s also got “zing”... if that’s a real thing.(?)

And now I’ve finished the bottle. Oops. That was much quicker than expected.

I’d venture to guess this would be spectacular with a hearty salad and maybe some light fish.

Now I’m hungry.

Cheers!!

Winemaker Response:

"This post makes me a fan of yours! What a journey in one small post. Thank you so much for taking the time to go through this wine and give an excellent experience of the thing to the rest of us. I couldn't have (and probably didn't) say it better myself. Cheers!!" - Chris Baker
