Semillon And Sauv Blanc Combine For One Elegent Wine.

Updated: Jun 3, 2019

Sauvignon Blanc is periodically viewed as a more feminine wine choice for some reason. A woman's go-to for a lunch with the girls. But I'm not ashamed to admit it's much more than a semi-sweet afternoon sipper for the ladies. On top of that, you have some Semillon packed into this bottle, which #WineFolly recently called "France's 3rd most important white". It's a bit more refined than Sauv Blanc but still has the fruit/citrus/floral notes that you seek out in a truly vibrant white wine. Matt Iaconis has combined these two varietals and...well...it's delicious.

The label is fun. Lots of color. Interesting font choice. Overall it's presented with a bit of a retro vibe with modern touches...whatever that means.

The Review: 4/5

My first assessment involved all sorts of green notes and stemminess. The smell and the flavor are both bountiful with fresh grass and grape stems. There is more to this wine than that, but the details of our very first sensory interaction are worth noting.

It took a few minutes for the floral action to show up. A smidge of honey and some jasmine... maybe even some lavender?

The Semillon (from Yountville = incredible) seems to add a crispness or honed edge to the blend while the softness of the Sauv Blanc balances it out with some gentle fruit and floral notes. A bit of sweet citrus bordering on something tropical, like an unripe pineapple…?

(time passes….)

Perhaps some of my initial thoughts on the flavor were premature. I allowed the wine to chill overnight (I use the VacuVin stoppers, I love them tremendously) and it seems to have softened dramatically, bringing out much more fruit and natural sweetness.

The nose still has a touch of the stems from earlier but the wine has become more soothing and comes off a bit more elegant. In fact, in just about every way it seems more elegant and has truly transformed into a much more sophisticated synthesis of premium varietals.

I think it’s possible I didn’t wait long enough after the wine’s delivery. I let it sit under the counter for a day, then chilled it. But about 28 hours after it arrived I was eager to try this new Iaconis. Perhaps my lack of patience was the contributing factor to the wine’s initial flavor...or maybe it’s so new/fresh that it just needs a little time to stretch before you enjoy it.

Either way, it turned out to be fantastic.

I’d love to have another bottle for the summer, alongside some cheeses and maybe fresh crab or grilled chicken...something like that.

Cheers!!
