It's about white wine in a can, get it? Sorry, not sorry.
~Iaconis California White Wine, 2018
Here we are, face to face, a man and a can of white wine.
The Review: 3.5/5
Right after opening the can I took a sip and almost reeled back due to a surge of an odd acidity. I don’t think that’s supposed to be my reaction….I’m thinking it was a smidge of inert gas and the first sip of vino combining...it’s a can thing I guess. I will give it a few seconds to regain its barings. I would understand if it needed to take a breath or two after being locked up in aluminum.
After a couple minutes I dove back in, looking for a dramatic adjustment in the flavor profile. Luckily, it came around, with that inert acidity dissipating and much more of the fruit finding its way across my palate. Gentle pear and maybe some granny smith apple...but I can’t help but sense that the can is taking something away from the wine, something small but big enough to notice the difference once you pour it into a glass.
Yes, of course I’m also pouring it into a glass! I want to see how this white adapts to new surroundings and if the flavor changes ever-so-slightly like the can of Iaconis Rosé I enjoyed.
The color is extremely transparent with just a touch of distant gold...it’s almost like the hue an expensive mirror has on the beveled edges...if that makes sense.
The glass provides a much more boastful sensory experience, introducing the true smell of the wine, which can’t quite be defined while in the can. It’s a very silky, almost velvety smell with just a dash of sugar as well as some pretty ripe grape rind. The pear continues to shine but the apple seems to change into a more Fuji or Pink Delicious style.
Once we’ve established that the wine is pretty damn tasty, the only thing left to discuss is the can itself. I don’t think it’s working to the advantage of the wine in any way. It’s still a great wine, and the can is portable, but there is something about the can that (in my opinion) takes away from the experience. I wouldn’t be upset about having a six pack of these in the fridge to enjoy when wine-time required an aluminum vessel, but I’m not extremely interested in drinking wine out of a can in the future, regardless of the quality.
Cheers!!
